Welcome to Fight Clubs | Night Clubs

In this course, students will examine contemporary expressions of masculinity in Western cultures. Students will explore the foundations for these views, examine the consequences, and explore the many ways male-identified individuals “wear” their masculinity. For the past generation or so, with the examples set by the queer, anti-racist, and anti-colonial movements, many male-identifying people have questioned their relation to so-called traditional masculinity. What are the benefits and the costs of these different expressions of masculinity in our culture and what impact do they have on individuals and society as a whole?

What will I be able to do when I finish this course?

  • Understand key ideas about masculinity in Western culture and their origins.
  • Explain various viewpoints about masculinity in Western culture and the effects of these ideas on individuals and society.
  • Compare views of masculinity to gain a better understanding of the origins of the views.

How is this course taught?

Through a combination of interactive lectures and independent work, you will explore the course materials, share what you have discovered, and learn from others’ perspectives. During class, there will be discussions based on the readings, films, and documentaries viewed. You will also interact with your fellow classmates through several collaborative tools, where you will both share your thoughts and comment upon the ideas of your peers.

There will be many ideas and viewpoints explored in this class, and it is expected that you will not agree with all of them. My role as your teacher is to ensure that our discussions are respectful. Your role as a student is to take this opportunity to develop your critical thinking skills and to learn about the views of others.
